Entered the Wrong Tracking Number on an Amazon Order? Fix It Before It Counts Against You
Entered the wrong tracking number on an Amazon order? Find both orders, edit the shipment before delivery, and message buyers before a claim lands.
On Wednesday night your AliExpress supplier's tracking numbers came in, and you (or your VA) worked through the batch: open AliExpress, copy the number, switch to Seller Central, find the order, pick a carrier, confirm. Twelve done. Nine days later a buyer message lands: "My tracking says the package just reached a sorting center in Ohio. I live in Arizona."
You open the order. Someone entered the wrong tracking number on this Amazon order: it belongs to a different customer's parcel, which means another order in that batch is carrying this buyer's number. Two orders, each confirmed with the other's parcel.
Neither parcel has been delivered yet, and that is the window that matters. Below is what to do in it, and how to keep it from happening with next week's batch.
The short answer
If you entered the wrong tracking number on an Amazon order, you can usually correct it yourself: in Seller Central, open the order from the Shipped list, use the shipment edit option, replace the tracking ID and the carrier, and confirm again. Sellers on Amazon's forums report that the edit stays available until the carrier marks the parcel delivered, and that the Valid Tracking Rate metric catches up within about 72 hours. Fix both orders involved, the one the buyer complained about and the one whose number it was, then message both buyers before either of them watches a stranger's parcel get delivered and opens a claim.

What actually happened when two Amazon orders swapped tracking numbers?
The dropshipper's version of this mistake is messier than the single-order version in the forum threads. Both parcels left the supplier. Both are moving toward the right people. Nothing physical is wrong. The confirmations are wrong, and the confirmation is what Amazon and your buyers see.
So three things are now true at once. Buyer A is watching a parcel travel to Buyer B's city, and when it shows delivered somewhere else, Buyer A has every reason to open an A-to-z Guarantee claim for an item not received. Buyer B's order will show delivered before anything reaches their door, which invites the same claim. And both orders carry a tracking number that does not belong to them, which is a question mark on Valid Tracking Rate.
The claims are the bigger risk. A-to-z claims count toward your Order Defect Rate, which Amazon expects to stay under 1%. A seller shipping 50 Amazon orders a month gets a 1% ODR from a single claim.
There is often a fourth problem for a Shopify and Amazon seller. If that AliExpress batch also included Shopify orders, the same number you pasted on the wrong Amazon order may be sitting on a Shopify fulfillment too, because it came off the same list. The Shopify customer already has a shipping confirmation with that link in it.
How do you fix a wrong tracking number on an Amazon order?
Work through these in order. Budget about an hour: two orders to fix, and a batch to check.
1. Find both orders, starting from the supplier side
Do not start in Seller Central. Start in AliExpress, where each order's details show its tracking number and its shipping address. Go through the AliExpress orders from that batch and find the one whose tracking number matches the number you confirmed on the complaining buyer's order; the address on that AliExpress order tells you whose parcel it really is. Now you have both Amazon orders: the one carrying the wrong number, and the one whose number it was. Write both order IDs down before you touch anything.
2. Change the tracking number in Seller Central
These are the steps sellers describe on Amazon's own forums (Change tracking number, I accidentally entered the wrong tracking ID), not Amazon documentation, so treat them as a map rather than a promise: go to Manage Orders, switch to the Shipped view, open the order, choose the edit option on the shipment, replace the tracking ID, pick the carrier from Amazon's list instead of typing it, and confirm. Then do the same on the second order.
The replies in those threads do not all agree. Some sellers report the edit worked and the order updated; others say they could not find an edit at all. The pattern in the replies is that editing is possible while the parcel is still in transit. The same question comes up on the EU forum as well (Entered the wrong tracking number), so this is not a North America quirk. If your Seller Central layout differs, start from the order detail page and look for anything that lets you edit the shipment.
3. If the parcel is already marked delivered
The same threads report that once a parcel is marked delivered, the edit is gone, and you cannot repair the confirmation. What you can still do: send the buyer the correct number and carrier, and keep the AliExpress order record (it shows shipment to their address) in case a claim comes later. Accept that this order may stay in your 30-day window as a defect, and move on to protecting the next 30 days.
4. Message both buyers
Keep it short and plain through Buyer-Seller Messaging: "The tracking number on your order was entered incorrectly. The correct number is X with carrier Y. Your parcel is on its way, and I am sorry for the confusion." Send it to both buyers, including the one who has not noticed yet. The buyer who sees a stranger's delivery scan before hearing from you is the one who opens a claim.
5. Check the Shopify side of the same batch
If the same supplier batch included Shopify orders, open each Shopify order you fulfilled from it and compare its tracking number with the AliExpress order for that customer. If one is wrong, correct the tracking on that fulfillment so the customer's link points at their own parcel. One swapped pair on Amazon usually means the whole batch was done under the same conditions, so check the whole batch, beyond the two you already know about.
6. Check Account Health in a few days
Open Account Health and look at Valid Tracking Rate by category and at Order Defect Rate. Sellers report the tracking metric reflects an edit within about 72 hours. If the two orders still show as tracking defects after that, the edit did not take, and you are back at step 2 or step 3.

Does a wrong tracking ID hurt your Valid Tracking Rate if the parcel arrived?
Maybe, and that uncertainty is the reason to fix it. Valid Tracking Rate measures what you confirmed, not what happened to the box. A tracking ID counts as valid when the carrier and number check out, and seller-fulfilled orders need 95% or more valid tracking per category over a rolling 30 days. Since January 2025 Amazon measures this across all shipping providers, per its own forum notice (Valid Tracking Rate policy update for seller-fulfilled orders). Below the line, Amazon can restrict you from selling non-FBA items in that category (How to maintain a healthy Valid Tracking Rate).
A swapped number is a real number with real carrier scans, so it may well pass as valid. Amazon does not say whether it also checks the scans against the order's delivery address, and you will not know how it scored these two orders until the metric updates. The claim risk does not depend on that answer: a buyer whose tracking shows delivered somewhere else will contact you or Amazon either way. Fix the confirmation while the edit is still available, and the question goes away.
Why does the wrong number end up on the wrong order?
Because nothing ties the number to the order until the paste. The AliExpress order list is sorted by purchase time. Seller Central's Manage Orders is sorted by its own rules. Two orders for the same SKU placed the same day look identical in both lists. The clipboard holds whatever was copied last. Copy A, get interrupted, copy B, paste on A's order, and every pair after it is suspect.
Batch confirmation at night makes it worse. None of this is a VA problem; it is a workflow with no check in it.
You can add the check without any tool:
- Build the pairing first, confirm second. Before anyone opens Seller Central, write a sheet with four columns: Amazon order ID, AliExpress order ID, tracking number, carrier. Confirm from the sheet, never from alt-tab.
- Put the Amazon order ID on the AliExpress order at purchase time, in the note field, so the supplier order itself names the Amazon order it belongs to.
- One order at a time, two windows side by side. Confirm, then copy the next number. Never hold two numbers in your head.
- Pick the carrier from Amazon's list rather than typing it. Valid tracking needs a carrier Amazon recognises as well as an error-free number, so a hand-typed name that Amazon does not match can fail validation even when the number is right.
- Check Account Health once a week, so a bad night shows up in days rather than in a warning weeks later.
How DS-Mate handles this
In DS-Mate, the supplier order is placed for one specific Amazon order, and the tracking number comes back the same way. When AliExpress ships, DS-Mate reads the tracking number and carrier from that supplier order and the order moves to In transit. The number never passes through a clipboard, so there is no cross-order paste to make.
DS-Mate confirms the shipment to Amazon once a carrier in the buyer's country has the parcel, with that order's own tracking number and carrier. A number DS-Mate cannot verify is never sent; if it still cannot be verified after a few days of checks, the order is held for you to resolve. That wait has a cost worth knowing: until the confirmation goes out, Amazon still shows the order as unshipped, so a parcel that is slow to reach a local carrier can count against your ship-by date. DS-Mate makes that trade on purpose, because a confirmation sent a little later is easier to live with than a tracking number Amazon cannot follow. The same applies to Shopify orders from the same supplier batch: the tracking goes onto the Shopify order it was bought for. And on any order's page, the items list shows each item's tracking number, so checking whether a number belongs to an order is one look rather than a tab switch.
What DS-Mate does not do: reach into Seller Central and repair a confirmation that was entered by hand. If your two orders were confirmed manually, the six steps above are still yours. DS-Mate's job is the next batch, and every batch after it. If Amazon is one of two channels you run from an AliExpress supplier, the wider picture of what can and cannot be automated on the Amazon side is in Amazon Dropshipping Automation: Stay Compliant and Scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from sellers who confirmed a tracking number on the wrong Amazon order:
Can I change a tracking number on Amazon after confirming shipment?
Sellers on Amazon's forums report that you can: open the order from the Shipped view in Manage Orders, use the shipment edit option, replace the tracking ID and carrier, and confirm again. The replies are not unanimous, and some sellers could not find the edit, so treat the steps as a starting point rather than a documented feature. Fix both orders involved in a swap, including the one no buyer has flagged yet.
Can I edit the tracking after the parcel is delivered?
The same forum replies say no: once the carrier marks the parcel delivered, the edit is no longer available. At that point, message the buyer with the correct number and keep your AliExpress order record as proof of shipment to their address. Expect that order to stay in your rolling 30-day window as it is.
Does a wrong tracking number hurt my account health if the parcel still arrived?
It can, in two ways. The bigger one is claims: a buyer whose tracking shows a delivery somewhere else can open an A-to-z claim, and claims count toward Order Defect Rate, which Amazon expects under 1%. The smaller one is Valid Tracking Rate, which needs 95% or more valid tracking per category over a rolling 30 days; a swapped number has real scans and may pass, but you will not know until the metric updates. Correct it while you still can.
I used the same AliExpress number on a Shopify order too. What do I check?
Open every Shopify order you fulfilled from the same supplier batch and compare each tracking number with the AliExpress order for that customer. If one is wrong, correct the tracking on that fulfillment so the customer's tracking link points at their own parcel. A swap on Amazon is a sign the whole batch was confirmed under the same conditions.
How long until Valid Tracking Rate updates after I fix the number?
Sellers on the forums report about 72 hours for the metric to reflect an edit. Note both order IDs when you make the fix, check Account Health by category after three days, and if the two orders still show as defects, the edit did not take.
The one thing to remember
A tracking number is only right when it is tied to the order before it is confirmed. Today: find both orders from the AliExpress side, edit the shipment on both before delivery, message both buyers, and check the Shopify fulfillments from the same batch. Then change the workflow so the number and the order travel together.
